Origin
La Rioja is considered both the most famous and the oldest regulated wine region in Spain. The Denominación de Origen Rioja has existed since 1925, and the elevated Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) status was granted in 1991. The region stretches along the Ebro River to the south of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. Its soils range from limestone with iron-rich clay to gravel deposits near the rivers.
